Review #543 - Found North Batch 010

While many of Found North's whiskies either have a significant rye component or exotic finishing casks, they also blend some whiskies with more subtle specifications. Here's one example: their Batch 010, a Canadian whisky-style take on an American wheated bourbon. This is the breakdown of blend components:

  • 66% of the blend: corn components from 19 to 23 years old, aged in ex-bourbon barrels

  • 29% of the blend: an 8 year old wheat component

  • 5% of the blend: a 9 year old malted barley component, aged in new American oak

So, in summary, an 8 year age stated Canadian whisky (with an average spirit age in the high teens) with a mashbill of 66% corn, 29% wheat, and 5% barley. How will this compare to some high-proof wheated bourbons?

Found North Batch 010

USA/Canada - Blend

Price: USD 150 (2025, based on recent auction results)

Age Statement: 8 Years

Strength: 61.9% ABV

Cask Makeup: Ex-bourbon barrels and new American oak

Details: Not chill filtered, no color added, bottled 2024; 4,552 bottles

Tasting Methodology: Reviewed 1 time; bottle 80% fill level at time of review. Tasted in a nosing glass, rested 15+ minutes

Nose: Sweet - butterscotch, quite rich and decadent. We get some vanilla and creme brulee notes, as well as soft grain character; it's a bit spirity, but that's nicely balanced by the refined sugar notes.

Palate: A thick mouthfeel - great texture and viscosity. This palate reflects the nose well: potent butterscotch, quite sweet, with vanilla, cream, even cream soda. Lemon curd adds a soft fruity side, and the oak is more prevalent now - wood spice, a little fizzy.

Finish: Oak grows in intensity, more mature with lots of leather and spice. The great texture lingers, and fizzy cream soda adds the bright sweetness; it's a long finish.

Final Note: Another very good blend from Found North - this one leaned into the light, sweet notes when compared to the brand's typical rye-influenced whiskies. Lovely cream soda and sugary notes; there are definitely similarities to the wheated bourbon style, but this bottle offers more intensity and maturity than most bourbons in the same price bracket.

Value is okay - expensive bottle, but worth a splurge because of the great flavor that it delivers. This bottle is available at auction for a more reasonable price than a lot of the other Found North releases - could be a good pickup if you want to try the brand.

Our Average Rating: 8.5 / 10

In the current whisky landscape of increasing prices and variable quality, we've added a value rating to our reviews that relates to the score and the available pricing of each whisky. This roughly equates to a 0-10 scale; no reviews so far have exceeded a score of 10, although it is technically possible for the formula to produce a value rating higher than 10 with a high enough score and low enough price.

Value Rating: 6.40
