Review #651 - Signatory Vintage Glentauchers 12 Year - US 100 Proof Edition #3
From Signatory's 100 US Proof series, we have a Glentauchers aged for 12 years. The cask selection for this edition is first fill Oloroso casks - that should add a rich, fruity influence to the single malt, especially with a decent length of maturation.
Glentauchers, hailing from the Speyside region, is not easy to find in single malt form, unless you browse the independent bottling realm. It's known for a sweet, fruity, and sometimes floral character, especially when aged in ex-bourbon casks; malty notes or cereal notes are also common to find. Let's find out if the spirt character has held up to the sherry casks used for aging in this batch.
Signatory Vintage Glentauchers 12 Year - US 100 Proof Edition #3
Scotland/Speyside - Single Malt
Price: USD 89 (2025)
Age Statement: 12 Years
Strength: 50% ABV
Cask Makeup: First fill Oloroso sherry butts
Details: Not chill filtered, no color added; distilled 2012, bottled 2024
Tasting Methodology: Reviewed 1 time; bottle at 70% fill level at time of review. Tasted in a nosing glass, rested 15+ minutes
Nose: Musty, a little bit dank; some darker notes like raisin and syrupy prune. Orange adds more fruit, and it grows more sweet with time... there's just a little hint of mushroom-like funk.
Palate: A medium-thick mouthfeel, with lots of savory or umami notes from the sherry casks. Raisins and orange return from the nose, as does the musty or funky background character. It's quite dark and dense.
Finish: Oranges, both sweet and savory, and a bit of a wood tannin arrives. Teriyaki-flavored beef jerky and more funk linger in the aftertaste; it's a medium-long finish.
Final Note: An interesting Glentauchers - we're more accustomed to getting light fruits, especially tropical fruits, from this single malt, but those sherry casks are playing a big role in this bottling. Lots of funky and savory notes, which are great, and of course, there's a strong dark fruit character from those first fill casks. Good whisky, one that you can spend some time with.
Value is okay, a little above average. The Signatory Vintage 100 Proof range generally represents very good value, but these bottlings are a bit more expensive here in the US; the strength is also lower than that seen in other markets, so the flavors are good, but not quite as dense.
Our Average Rating: 7.0 / 10
In the current whisky landscape of increasing prices and variable quality, we've added a value rating to our reviews that relates to the score and the available pricing of each whisky. This roughly equates to a 0-10 scale; no reviews so far have exceeded a score of 10, although it is technically possible for the formula to produce a value rating higher than 10 with a high enough score and low enough price.
Value Rating: 6.27
