Review #795 - Weller Full Proof Single Barrel - Wiseguy Lounge Pick 'Jackpot'

The Weller line from Buffalo Trace used a wheated bourbon mashbill, and it also uses a lower barrel entry proof than standard: 57% ABV (114 proof), instead of the more common 62.5% ABV (125 proof) used by much of the industry. The mashbill and lower entry proof have the potential to combine to create a softer, sweeter bourbon profile.

This Full Proof version turns that up to max volume, as the bottling strength matches that 114 proof entry strength. This is a single barrel variant of the Weller Full Proof bourbon, though, so we have a chance to see if there's any unique character coming from the individual barrel. The Wiseguy Lounge, a chain of speakeasy bars, selected this barrel; there's no age statement, but we do know that this bourbon is not chill filtered.

Available Price: USD 150 (2026, based on recent auction results)

Age Statement: NAS

Strength: 57% ABV

Details: Not chill filtered

Tasting Methodology: Reviewed 1 time; bottle at 70% fill level at time of review. Tasted in a nosing glass rested 15+ minutes

Nose: A bit nutty, with sweet notes of caramel, vanilla, corn grain, and butterscotch. Some leather and fresh lumber notes hint at the oak presence; nutmeg and peanut brittle come with time, and there's a mellow heat to this nose.

Palate: The mouthfeel has a medium thickness. The complexion is light, with some sharp oak tannins, fresh lumber notes, orange, and a bit of caramel. It's spicy, too, with black pepper building in intensity.

Finish: Orange bitters and amaro, more oak tannins, but we also get sweet flavors like simple syrup and caramel. It's a medium length finish; in the aftertaste, there's the subtlest cherry note.

Final Note: The profile here was a bit unusual for Buffalo Trace, at least in our opinion. There was plenty of sweetness from the baking notes, but we really didn't find too much of a fruit presence in the flavor profile, something we strongly associate with the distillery. There was also a stronger spicy side here, lots of pepper, tannins, and amaro bitterness. It's a good single barrel though, and one with nice balance in the end.

Value at the MSRP for Weller Full Proof would be very good; even at a secondary price of about $150, it isn't terrible, maybe a little below average.

Our Rating: 7.8 / 10

In the current whisky landscape of increasing prices and variable quality, we've added a value rating to our reviews that relates to the score and the available pricing of each whisky. This roughly equates to a 0-10 scale; no reviews so far have exceeded a score of 10, although it is technically possible for the formula to produce a value rating higher than 10 with a high enough score and low enough price.

Value Rating (MSRP): 7.92

Value Rating (Available Price): 5.83
