Review #817 - SMWS 30.127 'Elusive Intrigue' - Glenrothes 15 Year
In April of 2026, we had the opportunity to attend the monthly outturn tasting for the Scotch Malt Whisky Society's USA chapter in Indianapolis, Indiana. These sessions generally consist of the blind tasting of 6 different whiskies which will be released in the given month, and the bottles are revealed after discussion of tasting notes and distillery guesses have been made. This April 2026 tasting had a sherry cask theme - all of the whiskies involved were either matured or finished in Oloroso or Pedro Ximenez sherry. This is 1 of 6 reviews from this month's outturn.
From the Scotch Malt Whisky Society's 'Spicy & Dry' flavor profile, we have this 15 year old Glenrothes. This Speyside distillery is known for sherry cask influence in its official bottlings; this single cask follows a similar trend with a 3 year finished in a first fill Oloroso sherry hogshead. Even after 15 years of aging, the cask strength still sits at a lofty 60.3% ABV, so we're expecting an intense tasting experience.
SMWS 30.127 'Elusive Intrigue' - Glenrothes 15 Year
Scotland/Speyside - Single Malt
Price: USD 165 (2026)
Age Statement: 15 Years
Strength: 60.3% ABV
Cask Makeup: Ex-bourbon hogshead, finished in a first fill American oak Oloroso sherry hogshead
Details: Not chill filtered, no color added; distilled May 8, 2009; 277 bottles
Tasting Methodology: Reviewed blind 1 time. Tasted in a nosing glass, rested 15+ minutes
Nose: An unbelievable amount of sweet butterscotch - intensely sweet, rich, and decadent. Bananas and vanilla, cream soda, a bit of orange fruit... then there's sassafras spice in the background, as well as subtle well-aged oak notes.
Palate: Oaky and spicy to start, with tannins and anise. Cream soda and vanilla return from the nose, as well as a bit of orange, with takes on a tangy character. Buttercream cake icing adds more creamy sweetness.
Finish: Cherries and Amaretto, a bit syrupy at times, but there's still a warm, spicy element to the oak. Baking spices grow in intensity in the aftertaste.
Final Note: We did get some spicy oak notes at times, mostly in the finish, but for us, this was an exceptionally sweet dram, especially on the nose. Across the tasting room, notes of butterscotch and cake icing were the most common call-outs; it has a surprisingly light flavor complexion for a whisky with 3 years in Oloroso sherry, but perhaps that's a bit of the American oak influence, which adds less spice than European oak. A very good whisky, a treat, which we would be happy to sip any time.
Value is a little below average as this SMWS bottle does come with a hefty price tag; that said, Glenrothes whiskies are rarely cheap, and this is probably the best example that we've tried so far, so it could be worth it to those who like the profile or distillery.
Our Rating: 8.0 / 10
In the current whisky landscape of increasing prices and variable quality, we've added a value rating to our reviews that relates to the score and the available pricing of each whisky. This roughly equates to a 0-10 scale; no reviews so far have exceeded a score of 10, although it is technically possible for the formula to produce a value rating higher than 10 with a high enough score and low enough price.
Value Rating: 5.83
