Review #820 - SMWS 10.274 'Life's a Riot' - Bunnahabhain 10 Year

In April of 2026, we had the opportunity to attend the monthly outturn tasting for the Scotch Malt Whisky Society's USA chapter in Indianapolis, Indiana. These sessions generally consist of the blind tasting of 6 different whiskies which will be released in the given month, and the bottles are revealed after discussion of tasting notes and distillery guesses have been made. This April 2026 tasting had a sherry cask theme - all of the whiskies involved were either matured or finished in Oloroso or Pedro Ximenez sherry. This is 1 of 6 reviews from this month's outturn.

Bunnahabhain is a distillery that's more famous for its unpeated expressions, but these days, a sizeable portion of their production actually goes into peated products. Here's one example from SMWS: a 10 year old single malt. While heavily peated whisky bottled by the distillery are often called Moine, the stock like this cask that is sold to independent bottlers is generally referred to as Staoisha.

This peaty Bunnahabhain is actually a combination of multiple ex-bourbon casks which were combined and transferred into a larger sherry butt (which had previously been used to mature whisky from distillery 30, Glenrothes) after a 6 year initial maturation. Another 4 or so years was spent in that sherry cask; it was a second fill cask, so the sherry influence won't be as strong as some sherry bomb whiskies, but it was also a Spanish oak cask, which could potentially add a nice spice element to the flavors.

SMWS 10.274 'Life's a Riot' - Bunnahabhain 10 Year

Scotland/Islay - Single Malt

Price: USD 165 (2026)

Age Statement: 10 Years

Strength: 60.5% ABV

Cask Makeup: Ex-bourbon hogsheads, finished in a second fill Spanish oak sherry butt

Details: Not chill filtered, no color added; distilled October 17, 2013; 446 bottles

Tasting Methodology: Reviewed blind 1 time. Tasted in a nosing glass, rested 15+ minutes

Nose: Very strong peat smoke, like a campfire, with accents of wood smoke. There's a mineral side as well, and the complexion is dark and rich; we get more char in the background.

Palate: Actually quite medicinal, more than we've experience with other peated Bunnahabhains. Iodine and strong peat, charcoal, but there's an intensely sweet barbecue note behind that.

Finish: Strong peat continues to dominate, accented by charcoal. Red fruit like strawberry builds in intensity, and this is a very long finish.

Final Note: This is such an intense, flavorful whisky, one that lingers for a very long time. Very strong peat smoke, but there are nice details like red fruit, savory barbecue, and wood smoke; overall, a great whisky, especially for peat lovers.

Value doesn't seem great at first sight for a 10 year old single malt, but because this delivers such amazing flavors, we actually think the value is okay.

Our Rating: 8.5 / 10

In the current whisky landscape of increasing prices and variable quality, we've added a value rating to our reviews that relates to the score and the available pricing of each whisky. This roughly equates to a 0-10 scale; no reviews so far have exceeded a score of 10, although it is technically possible for the formula to produce a value rating higher than 10 with a high enough score and low enough price.

Value Rating: 6.20

About Us: We're a husband and wife review team living in the Midwest United States. Generally, our reviews and tasting notes will be a compilation of both of our experiences with a whisky over several tasting sessions.
