Review #826 - SMWS 16.60 'Entering Uncharted Paths' - Glenturret 10 Year

Like most Glenturret whiskies released by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, this single cask was made with the distillery's peated distillate, or 'Ruadh Mhor.' It was aged for 10 years in a refill re-charred hogshead; the Society categorized this whisky in its 'peated' flavor profile.

SMWS 16.60 'Entering Uncharted Paths' - Glenturret 10 Year

Scotland/Highland - Single Malt

Price: USD 125 (2021)

Age Statement: 10 Years

Strength: 56.9% ABV

Cask Makeup: Refill recharred hogshead

Details: Not chill filtered, no color added; distilled November 25, 2010; 201 bottles

Tasting Methodology: Reviewed 2 times (once blind) over 15 months from a sample. Tasted in a nosing glass each time, rested 15+ minutes

Nose: A dark complexion, with wood char and smoke, molasses, and a bit of rum dunder or funk. Brighter scents like creme brulee, lactic yogurt, and a bit of citrus like lime and orange follow. There are some nice estery fermentation notes as well.

Palate: The mouthfeel is medium-thick; it's both sweet and smoky, with peat and astringent wood smoke combining with buttery malt, molasses, and cane sugar. Charcoal, limes, and a strong starchy oak note build, but it also grows more rounded and balanced over time.

Finish: Wood spice, wood smoke, some peat - this one bites a bit, but we also get subtleties of vanilla, coconut, and soft malt in the background. There's a bit of a phenolic side in the aftertaste, maybe even a rubbery note. It's a long finish.

Final Note: Another solid peaty Glenturret, and one that showcases the strong peat smoke, but also some nice sweet notes, almost a bit rum-like at times. This isn't the most complex Glenturret that we've tried, but there's still a nice amount of flavor, both sweet and spicy, and it does show off some interesting fermentation character.

Value for this bottle is a little below average for us, but about average when it comes to our SMWS reviews, as the prices on those bottles tend to run a bit higher.

Our Rating: 7.0 / 10

In the current whisky landscape of increasing prices and variable quality, we've added a value rating to our reviews that relates to the score and the available pricing of each whisky. This roughly equates to a 0-10 scale; no reviews so far have exceeded a score of 10, although it is technically possible for the formula to produce a value rating higher than 10 with a high enough score and low enough price.

Value Rating: 5.60
