Review #829 - Virginia Distillery Port Cask Single Barrel - Scotch 4 Dummies Pick

Virginia Distillery produces American single malts in the Lovingston, Virginia area; their single malts are made in the traditional Scottish fashion, using copper pot stills and double distillation. Much of their production starts maturing in ex-bourbon barrels, and some of the whisky is fully matured that way, like the previous Scotch 4 Dummies Virginia Distillery pick that we reviewed; other batches are finished in a variety of cask types, such as this Port wine version.

This Scotch 4 Dummies single cask spent about 5 years maturing in an ex-bourbon barrel; after that, another 1 to 2 years was spent in that Port wine cask. The label doesn't specify, but based on the dark color and richness of the wine influence, we're guessing that this was a first fill Port cask. After the total of 7 years of maturation, this was bottled in 2025 at a punchy cask strength of 59.8% ABV (119.6 proof).

Virginia Distillery Port Cask Single Barrel - Scotch 4 Dummies Pick

USA - Single Malt

Price: USD 60 (2025)

Age Statement: 7 Years

Strength: 59.8% ABV

Cask Makeup: First fill ex-bourbon cask, finished in a Port wine cask

Details: Barrel 10220, bottled 2025

Tasting Methodology: Reviewed 3 times over 4 months; bottles at 90%, 80%, and 70% fill levels at times of review. Tasted in a nosing glass each time, rested 15+ minutes

Nose: Rich and strong, a bit hot up front; cocoa, tart cranberry, caramel, and sweet strawberry take center stage. There is a bit of an alcohol nip, just a hint of feinty notes here and there, but we also get chocolate, red apples, malt, hay, and cranberry sauce. Later, a bit of darker fruit like raisin pops up.

Palate: The mouthfeel is thick. This is very rich, with milk chocolate, cranberry sauce, cinnamon, and strong medjool date notes. Spiced Mexican chocolate, strawberry, and molasses follow, and we get raisin and syrupy cherries, too. It's a little spirity with that strength; accents of cardamom and stone fruit like nectarine follow.

Finish: The warmth from the strength lingers, and this is still full of bright red fruit: red apples, lots of cranberry, then just a bit of juicy nectarine. Spices build in strength, specifically cinnamon, wood spice, and a savory cooking spice which is hard to place. Caramel and bruleed sugar, along with more milk chocolate, linger in the aftertaste; it's a long finish.

Final Note: This is a very punchy whisky; it's beginning to settle as the fill level in the bottle lowers, but there's still some heat in the palate and finish. Past that, this is dripping with a mix of chocolate and bright red fruits, especially cranberry. There are nice baking spices as well, lots of sugary flavors - this is a fun, fiery, tasty American single malt.

We think that the value here is quite good. These Virginia Distillery releases are quite reasonably priced, even when it's a cask strength single barrel; for $60, this sort of bottling offers a ton of flavor. If you like wine-finished whiskies, especially single malts, a bottle like this is a great pickup.

Our Rating: 7.0 / 10

In the current whisky landscape of increasing prices and variable quality, we've added a value rating to our reviews that relates to the score and the available pricing of each whisky. This roughly equates to a 0-10 scale; no reviews so far have exceeded a score of 10, although it is technically possible for the formula to produce a value rating higher than 10 with a high enough score and low enough price.

Value Rating: 7.15
