Review #865 - Laphroaig Cairdeas Madeira Cask (2016)

Laphroaig's annual Cairdeas series began back in 2008 with a release that married quarter casks and sherry butts together; each year, there's a different twist on the recipe that goes into the batch. We've seen ex-bourbon editions, port casks, various types of sherry cask versions, and in 2016, they released this Madeira-finished single malt.

This whisky first matured in ex-bourbon barrels before being finished in those Madeira hogshead casks; in the past, we've typically found dark, sweet flavors in whiskies that use this type of fortified wine. Flavors such as raspberry, blackberry, chocolate, fudge, and caramel have been prominent - let's see if we find any of that behind the famous peaty Laphroaig distillate.

Laphroaig Cairdeas Madeira Cask (2016)

Scotland/Islay - Single Malt

Price: USD 145 (2026, based on recent auction results)

Age Statement: NAS

Strength: 51.6% ABV

Cask Makeup: Ex-bourbon casks, finished in Madeira hogsheads

Details: Bottled 2016

Tasting Methodology: Reviewed 3 times (once blind) over 6 months from a sample. Tasted in a nosing glass each time, rested 15+ minutes

Nose: Strong, sharp peat - ashy, quite medicinal, some creosote... it almost smells like the gunk you scrape off of a grill (in a good way). Soft oak and burning rubber give way to cinnamon and red grape, some mandarin orange, and a hint of lighter scents like lemon, vanilla, and tart lime. There's a decent amount of depth here; more distillate character returns, especially diesel fumes, coal smoke, and black pepper.

Palate: The mouthfeel has a medium thickness. Strong ashy peat, jalapeno pepper spice, and wood smoke are juxtaposed by cherries, mango, lots of juicy fruit. There's a nice buttery side to the malt profile, and we also get lime, slate, oranges, iodine, and creosote. This has a classic medicinal Laphroaig peat profile.

Finish: Charcoal, ash, sweet vanilla, and juicy orange fruits. The peat influence is still quite strong, but we also get lots of fruit: tart strawberry, plums, cherries, cranberry-orange bread. It's quite effervescent, and we get a nice petrichor note in the aftertaste. This has a medium length finish.

Final Note: This is one of the most peaty, medicinal Laphroaig whiskies that we've tried in recent years. There is definitely some cask influence behind that, and we got quite few fruit notes, but for us, this leaned into lighter, sweeter, more tropical fruits as opposed to some of the dark, fudgy flavors that we sometimes get with Madeira aging. Still, there's lots of complexity here - a very good whisky.

Value is about average at the current price that this seems to be selling for. Older versions of the Cairdeas series do generally retain their value, but they don't seem to appreciate on the secondary market too much; you can still buy this at auction for just a bit more than the original retail price, which seems fair.

Our Rating: 7.5 / 10

In the current whisky landscape of increasing prices and variable quality, we've added a value rating to our reviews that relates to the score and the available pricing of each whisky. This roughly equates to a 0-10 scale; no reviews so far have exceeded a score of 10, although it is technically possible for the formula to produce a value rating higher than 10 with a high enough score and low enough price.

Value Rating: 6.02
