Review #900 - Pappy Van Winkle's 15 Year Family Reserve (2025)

The Pappy Van Winkle range of bourbons, one of the most exclusive lines of whisky produced each year, sells for well above its suggested retail pricing scheme. This range, which consists of this 15 year old version, as well as 20 year and 23 year varieties, is made with an undisclosed wheated bourbon mashbill at the Buffalo Trace distillery.

There's also a range of proof points used when bottling these exclusive Pappy bourbons: the 23 year old is bottled at 47.8% ABV (95.6 proof), the 20 year old is bottled at 45.2% ABV (90.4 proof), and this 15 year old is bottled at the highest strength: 53.5%, or 107 proof. Here we have the 2025 edition of this 'unicorn' bourbon - let's see how it tastes.

Pappy Van Winkle's 15 Year Family Reserve (2025)

USA - Bourbon

MSRP: USD 240 (2025)

Available Price: USD 1,300 (2026, based on recent auction results)

Age Statement: 15 Years

Strength: 53.5% ABV

Details: Bottled 2025

Tasting Methodology: Reviewed 2 times over 1 month from a sample (thanks u/morewheatplease !). Tasted in a nosing glass each time, rested 15+ minutes

Nose: Old, leathery oak - that oak is strong, but not too dry. Dark fruits of plum, Luxardo cherries, grapes, and a bit of sugar-dusted blackberry build, and we also get baking notes like brown sugar, cinnamon, and then licorice. Cardamom, candied pecans, blood orange, and old leather book scents are accents; it's quite complex and leans just slightly sweet.

Palate: Grape Jolly Rancher candies, smoky barbecued oak, orange oil, and some dry wood spice. More sweetness in the form of brown sugar and vanilla cake, then we get cake icing and more fruit: cherry juice, a hint of nectarine, subtle plum. The complexion is dark; some tannins and black pepper add more spice later. It's a medium thickness mouthfeel.

Finish: Very oaky and a little bit tannic, but it's generally well-measured, not over-oaked. It shows it age well, and other dry notes of white pepper, sharp orange rind, wood char, and tart blackberry build. We get some smoked rosemary, grape, and a bit of perfume in the aftertaste; it's a medium-long finish.

Final Note: The last time we reviewed Pappy 15 (an unknown release year, but pre-2020), we were enamored with the nose especially. That's still the case here: one of the best noses on a bourbon that we've ever smelled, such a great range of complexity and balanced sweet and spicy notes. Lots of fruit, lots of oak, some nice sugary notes, but also a bit of a spice kick.

The palate and finish are good too, but they can't quite live up to the level of complexity that the nose teased. There's still decent balance in the palate, but the finish ended up being quite drying to us, even though it still displayed some of those fruit notes. It's a great bourbon, one of the best we've tried recently, but it can't quite match some of the best we've ever tried.

Let's get to value. The suggested retail price from Buffalo Trace for these limited bottles is creeping up each year; it's now $240 plus tax for this Pappy 15 Year, which is asking a lot. Still, at that sort of price, for this quality of bourbon, we think value would be... okay.

Then, to the secondary market, since that's the method that most of us would have to use to obtain a bottle. While much of the bourbon secondary market is falling in the past two years, this Pappy 15 doesn't actually seem to be dropping much; there's some variation in auction results, but the average price from recent sales seems to be hovering around $1,300. That's a lot of money, and secondary value is poor.

Our Rating: 8.5 / 10

In the current whisky landscape of increasing prices and variable quality, we've added a value rating to our reviews that relates to the score and the available pricing of each whisky. This roughly equates to a 0-10 scale; no reviews so far have exceeded a score of 10, although it is technically possible for the formula to produce a value rating higher than 10 with a high enough score and low enough price.

Value Rating (MSRP): 5.47

Value Rating (Available Price): 3.12
