Review #903 - Ardnahoe Cask Strength (Batch 1)

Ardnahoe is still a young distillery - it was founded in 2018, and its inaugural release just hit the market about 2 years ago, in May 2024 - but the brand is continuing to expand its core range quickly. In additional to the bourbon cask-focused Infinite Loch and the sherry cask-focused Bholsa, we now have a Cask Strength bottling, the first batch of which arrived in 2025.

This cask strength Islay single malt carries an age statement of 5 years, and it was matured in first fill ex-bourbon casks for that entire duration. This first batch was bottled at a hefty strength of 60.9% ABV, so we're expecting lots of flavor packed in, especially after our positive experiences with a couple of their other releases.

Ardnahoe Cask Strength (Batch 1)

Scotland/Islay - Single Malt

Price: USD 80 (2026)

Age Statement: 5 Years

Strength: 60.9% ABV

Cask Makeup: First fill ex-bourbon barrels

Details: Not chill filtered, no color added; batch 1, bottled 2025

Tasting Methodology: Reviewed 3 times over 1 month; bottles at 100%, 90%, and 70% fill levels at times of review. Tasted in a nosing glass each time, rested 15+ minutes

Nose: Punchy - good weight, almost like you can smell the oily texture. White pepper, strong peat, and some tar bring a sharp side to start, but we also get lime curd, vanilla, lemons, and buttery pastries. A strong earthy side builds, quite mezcal-like, maybe a bit of petrichor; soft mineral notes mix with saucy barbecued pork and salt in the background.

Palate: The mouthfeel is thick, and this has strong sharp peat, but also a really pretty spirit signature. It does taste a bit young and effervescent, but not in a bad way - quite bright and intense. Peppery, lemon-lime soda, salt, orange peel, a bit of earthy mezcal... then savory black pepper, grilled croissants, brioche, and malty bread. Vanilla and floral notes are accents, and the texture is excellent.

Finish: Oaky tannins and charred wood, stronger malty tones, and a fizzy texture - some ashy peat, a little bit earthy again. Freshly baked French bread combines with buttercream icing, lemon drop candies, pepper, and caramel. It's a long finish.

Final Note: This is great for its age - heavily peated whiskies are often their most vibrant with a single digit age statement, and this single malt shows off that character, packed with lots of punchy flavors. There's decent complexity for 5 years of maturation as well, and the ex-bourbon maturation shows through with those light fruits and soft baking spices.

In addition to liking this whisky, we like the value proposition here, too. At least in our area in the Midwest US, the pricing for Ardnahoe products has been very fair so far, generally $60 to $80. For high-quality Islay whisky, that's a good deal these days, and we think this bottle is definitely worth picking up.

Our Rating: 7.3 / 10

In the current whisky landscape of increasing prices and variable quality, we've added a value rating to our reviews that relates to the score and the available pricing of each whisky. This roughly equates to a 0-10 scale; no reviews so far have exceeded a score of 10, although it is technically possible for the formula to produce a value rating higher than 10 with a high enough score and low enough price.

Value Rating: 6.81
