Review #913 - Arran 10 Year Arran Barley (2025)
We know that Arran is a high quality producer - their releases are honest, focused on a good balance of cask and distillate character, and there's never any added color or chill filtration. Now, they've taken that a step further: a local barley-style release, joining compatriots such as Springbank with their Local Barley bottlings, Kilchoman with their 100% Islay releases, and Bruichladdich with their Islay Barley bottlings.
This is the first batch of the Arran Barley release, and as the name suggests, all of the barley used in the production of this spirit was grown on the Isle of Arran, specifically at Bellevue Farm. The barley in this batch is of the Optic variety, a spring barley variety grown around the UK which is often used for both brewing and distilling.
When it came to the cask selection for this release, Arran decided to keep it very similar to their classic 10 Year single malt: a generous proportion of first fill ex-bourbon casks, along with some 2nd fill sherry casks, in roughly the same ratio as the standard release. They did bump the bottling strength up to 50% ABV for this Arran Barley release, which we love to see; a total of 18,000 bottles was produced for the 2025 version, and Arran has stated that they plan to release a new batch each year.

Details: Not chill filtered, no color added; batch 001, bottled 2025; 18,000 bottles
Tasting Methodology: Reviewed 3 times over 2 months; bottles at 50%, 40%, and 40% fill levels at times of review. Tasted in a nosing glass each time, rested 15+ minutes
Nose: Tons of honey, but also quite fruity - juicy pears and tinned peaches, unripe green banana, even a bit of stone fruit. There's a nice malty sweetness that permeates the nose, and this can be a bit sprit-forward, but it doesn't taste young at all - just great balance. Fresh cut hay, some estery and floral scents, and vanilla, too.
Palate: Juicy peaches drizzled with honey, honeycomb - very sweet and pretty. Bananas, yellow apples, a bit of pear, but also mandarin orange and tart nectarine. This is bright and fizzy, again a good balance of spirit and cask, and there are accents of malt, floral flavors, white pepper, and a hint of polished oak.
Finish: Heather and wood spice, lots more honey, but it's still very fruit-forward: pears, oranges, peaches, and candied apple especially. It's lightly saccharine and effervescent at times, but we also find wood spice and cinnamon. This finish is medium-long.
Final Note: This is such a pretty single malt - excellent balance between that lovely Arran distillate and the casks, with the bourbon side showing predominantly instead of sherry. Lots of light fruits, lots of honey, but a nice subtle oak spice in the palate and finish to add a bit of age - really good stuff. We highly recommend this Arran Barley release.
Value is good too, and we're looking forward to the next batch in the series - we will likely buy it as soon as we see it.
