Review #932 - Tormore 12 Year Legacy Casks

Like the Tormore Blueprint Cask Program - Cream Sherry Casks that we looked at last month, this 12 Year Legacy Casks bottling is an "official pre-release" from Tormore as they undergo a branding transition under new ownership. Elixir Distillers purchased the distillery in 2022, and they've been revamping the production to go primarily into single malt bottlings, instead of being used as a typical blend filler Speyside component.

These Legacy Cask releases are single cask whiskies with vintage statements (2012, in this case); this particular release was fully aged in a first fill ex-bourbon barrel, and the bottling strength is 52.1% ABV. It isn't stated anywhere on the label, but considering the ethos that Elixir Distillers generally shows with their independent bottlings, we're guessing that this whisky doesn't have any added color, and it hasn't been chill filtered.

Tormore 12 Year Legacy Casks

Scotland/Speyside - Single Malt

Price: USD 110 (2026)

Age Statement: 12 Years

Strength: 52.1% ABV

Cask Makeup: First fill ex-bourbon barrel

Details: Cask #1193, distilled October 2012, bottled May 2025; 210 bottles

Tasting Methodology: Reviewed 3 times over 2 months; bottles at 80%, 70%, and 60% fill levels at times of review. Tasted in a nosing glass each time, rested 15+ minutes

Nose: Strong malty scents and orchard fruits - a classic ex-bourbon single malt nose. Pears are dominant, but we also get some honey-coated apples and a bit of lemon curd; hay, floral perfume, and sweet grassy notes add a lighter side. Green melon and icing sugar are accents.

Palate: The mouthfeel is medium-thick, and this is pretty warm despite a bottling strength of 'only' around 52% ABV. Bready, buttery pastries, honey, and strong malty notes... it's effervescent and fizzy, and we get icing sugar and vanilla. Soft wood spice from white pepper and tannins builds, and we get some coconut, yellow cake, hay, and tart peach in the background.

Finish: Dry grass clippings, softer oak, lots of bready and malty notes linger. Tannins build in intensity, and we get more pastries, vanilla, lemon-lime soda, apples, and lemongrass. In the aftertaste, spices of cinnamon, clove, and white pepper linger; it's a medium-long finish.

Final Note: This really is just a classic example of unpeated, ex-bourbon Speyside malt whisky. It drinks surprisingly warm for its strength, but it delivers good flavor intensity, too. There aren't any exotic flavors, nothing too wild or complex - just solid single malt whisky that epitomizes the profile.

Value for this bottle is about average for us. We're excited to see how the new Tormore core range tastes, and this Legacy Casks bottle is an indicator that we can expect solid quality.

Our Rating: 7.1 / 10

In the current whisky landscape of increasing prices and variable quality, we've added a value rating to our reviews that relates to the score and the available pricing of each whisky. This roughly equates to a 0-10 scale; no reviews so far have exceeded a score of 10, although it is technically possible for the formula to produce a value rating higher than 10 with a high enough score and low enough price.

Value Rating: 6.05
