While Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottlings from Campbeltown are less common, we still get a few casks from Glen Scotia from time to time.

The cask in question this time was a second fill ex-bourbon barrel, which could hint at some slightly more spirity flavors; the heavy peat smoke flavor might be a bit more intact, too.

This bottle spent the first part of its life in an ex-bourbon hogshead, like many of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottlings do, before it was moved into a Heavy Toast Medium Char (HTMC) hogshead.

Like all Raw Cask bottlings, this is totally unfiltered after it's drawn from the cask - there's plenty of sediment and char sitting at the bottom of the bottle.

Stranahan's, out of Denver, Colorado, is using ex-Oloroso sherry casks to finish one of their single malt bottlings.

These bottles are also somewhat famous for their high bottling proof - ours comes in just over the 65% mark.

Similar to many Scotch whiskies, this single malt is smoky, but it has a different source of smoke - instead of peat, Del Bac has wood smoked this whisky.

The difference in the two cask types is that some are made of American oak, while the others are European oak.

Brown-Forman tells us that this has a mashbill consisting of 65% rye grain, 20% malted barley, and 15% corn.

This version is peated and employs a Bordeaux red wine cask for maturation - this is reflected by a pink-ish hue in the color of the whisky in the bottle.

We get a powerful cask strength of 62.4% ABV, and this is a craft-presented whisky.

This was distilled in September of 2015, and then bottled in October of 2022, giving us a calculated age statement of 7 years.

One point of interest here is the length of the finish - it's a surprisingly short 1 to 4 weeks.

The virgin oak definitely adds some baking spices and mature character, but there's still some brighter spirit notes hanging around as well.

Made from 100% malted barley, but this isn't a single malt - this is a grain whisky, due to the use of a continuous still in the distillation process.

This 15 Year has full-blown sherry maturation.

While there's no obvious age statement on the front label, we do get a statement of two years on the back.

It's Concerto barley, grown on the Scottish mainland, and it was peated to 128.9 ppm during the malting and drying process.

Another well-regarded blended malt from Compass Box - Orchard House is a reasonably priced, ex-bourbon-cask-forward blend.

Roasted blue corn in the mashbill - that's the unique characteristic of this Balcones whisky.
