Review #965 - Heaven Hill 9 Year Bottled-In-Bond Double Mash

Here in 2026, Heaven Hill has added a new release to their 'Heaven Hill'-branded Bottled-In-Bond series: the Double Mash. This bourbon combines two different classic Heaven Hill bourbon mashbills: the typical ryed bourbon with 78% corn, 10% rye, and 12% malted barley (used in brands such as Elijah Craig, Evan Williams, and Henry McKenna), as well as their wheated mashbill of 68% corn, 20% rye, and 12% malted barley (used in brands like Larceny and Old Fitzgerald).

The total maturation time for the bourbon is 9 years, which took place in federally bonded warehouses, in line with the bottled-in-bond requirements. And because of those rules, this whisky is bottled at a strength of 50% ABV (100 proof) - let's see how it tastes.

Heaven Hill 9 Year Bottled-In-Bond Double Mash

USA - Bourbon

Price: USD 51 (2026)

Age Statement: 9 Years

Strength: 50% ABV

Details: Bottled 2026

Tasting Methodology: Reviewed 3 times over 1 month; bottles at 100%, 80%, and 70% fill levels at times of review. Tasted in a nosing glass each time, rested 15+ minutes

Nose: Soft sweetness, some leathery oak, and sort of a classic modern Heaven Hill character: vanilla, soft reddish fruit like cherry, light brown sugar, and almonds. Hints of peanuts and spiced caramel arrive, along with apple cider, butterscotch, nutmeg, and a grassy hay scent. Time brings a bit of floral perfume; it's very balanced.

Palate: The mouthfeel has a medium thickness. Wood spice, oak, and some lighter nut notes and toasted marshmallow. Leather combines with subtle plum and dark cherry notes; we also get a lighter cotton candy flavor, along with vanilla, mint, and mild menthol accents. Cinnamon, fig, and burnt toast are other subtleties.

Finish: Soft grain and brown sugar, wood spice, sweet vanilla... somewhat mild and rounded now, not overly sweet. Bready, or maybe toasty, and we get some caramel and a hint of dark fruit. Cranberry-orange bread, tannins, and juicy strawberries linger in the aftertaste; it's a medium length finish.

Final Note: We think that Heaven Hill found a good balance between the ryed bourbon and wheated bourbon components of this blend - we were able to find plenty of spice and mint/menthol from the rye, but also plenty of light, sweet vanilla and red fruit notes from the wheat aspect. It's a well-rounded bourbon, if a bit mild at times; the nose and palate showed nice nuance, and we found that the finish mellowed quite quickly. This is a pretty good bourbon, a solid addition to the Heaven Hill Bottled-In-Bond line.

Value for this bottle is also great - the price point of about $50 seems very fair, especially when you consider that this bourbon is at least 9 years old and has an elevated proof point. If you enjoy the Heaven Hill bourbon profiles, we recommend that you pick this one up while it's still available.

Our Rating: 6.7 / 10

In the current whisky landscape of increasing prices and variable quality, we've added a value rating to our reviews that relates to the score and the available pricing of each whisky. This roughly equates to a 0-10 scale; no reviews so far have exceeded a score of 10, although it is technically possible for the formula to produce a value rating higher than 10 with a high enough score and low enough price.

Value Rating: 7.19
