Review #966 - Glenlivet 12 Year Jamaica Edition

While Glenlivet has a permanent rum cask edition in their core lineup - the Caribbean Reserve - they also added this limited edition rum-finished version of their standard 12 Year Speyside single malt to the lineup. There's no information from the brand's website on the casks used for the main piece of the maturation, but we're assuming that it's mostly ex-bourbon casks, potentially a combination of first fill and refill casks.

They only finish a part of the batch in those Jamaican rum casks, so we'll see how much of an influence the tropical spirit really has on this whisky. At bottling time, this is reduced to a strength of 40% ABV.

Glenlivet 12 Year Jamaica Edition

Scotland/Speyside - Single Malt

Price: USD 52 (2026)

Age Statement: 12 Years

Strength: 40% ABV

Cask Makeup: Finished in Jamaican rum casks

Details: Bottled 2026

Tasting Methodology: Reviewed 3 times (once blind) over 5 months from a sample. Tasted in a nosing glass each time, rested 15+ minutes

Nose: Sweet, bright, and lots of juicy fruits: mango, banana, papaya, then some bubblegum, apples, and star fruit. There's a malty backbone behind that, along with honey, a grassy note, and a creamy accent; time brings pears, and it grows almost sickeningly sweet.

Palate: The mouthfeel is thin; wow, it's quite watery. The nose led us to believe there would be decent flavor, but it's quite mellow, borderline bland. We do get notes of pear, apple, and banana, as well as some malt, vanilla, and wood spice or cinnamon. It's very light, herbal, and soft.

Finish: Starchy oak, pears and apples, cinnamon spice, and a bit of brown sugar and malt. It's quite mild, and the flavors are tame; we get an accent of hay, and it's a short finish.

Final Note: The low bottling strength really kills the experience with this whisky. There aren't really any off notes, any specific flaws or bad flavors, but the texture and the flavor density are so weak that it really takes away from how enjoyable this could be. We also found the rum influence to be relatively mild - other than some creamy tropical fruit on the nose, this tasted more or less like the standard Glenlivet 12 Year.

Because we didn't particularly enjoy the drinking experience with this whisky, the value proposition suffers as well; we would spend our money elsewhere.

Our Rating: 4.2 / 10

In the current whisky landscape of increasing prices and variable quality, we've added a value rating to our reviews that relates to the score and the available pricing of each whisky. This roughly equates to a 0-10 scale; no reviews so far have exceeded a score of 10, although it is technically possible for the formula to produce a value rating higher than 10 with a high enough score and low enough price.

Value Rating: 4.70
