Review #956 - SMWS 10.271 'Wholly Smoke' - Bunnahabhain 10 Year

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society has bottled quite a few single casks from the Bunnahabhain distillery at this point; here we have the 271st cask, which was a US exclusive selection bottled for the Society's 2024 Global Gathering celebration. This is made with the heavily peated Bunnahabhain distillate, and it comes with an age statement of 10 years.

The first half of that maturation time was spent in an ex-bourbon hogshead, but after that, this was moved into a first fill Oloroso sherry hogshead for the next 5 years. Even with that cask influence, which could potentially be strong, the peat smoke hasn't been tamed - SMWS placed this whisky in their 'Heavily Peated' flavor profile, which is far less common than the normal 'Peated' profile.

Details: Not chill filtered, no color added; distilled October 2013; 279 bottles

Tasting Methodology: Reviewed 3 times over 3 months; bottles at 80%, 70%, and 60% fill levels at times of review. Tasted in a nosing glass each time, rested 15+ minutes

Nose: Very rich and strong overall - intense peat, lots of bonfire or wood smoke, rich syrupy fruits like raspberry and blackberry. There's a savory side like barbecue sauce, and we get accents of mineral notes and salt; time brings more sweetness from inky blackcurrant, cherry jam, charred oranges, and burnt caramel. There's a hint of brown sugar and cayenne, too.

Palate: Wow, this is amazingly rich and densely flavored. The mouthfeel is thick; it's juicy with sugary raspberry and dark stewed prunes, but also strongly smoky with effervescent peat, iodine, wood smoke, and charcoal. Soft mineral notes and caramel give way to bruleed sugar, tart orange oil, apricot jam, and strawberries; it's a bit of a sweet fruit bomb behind that heavy peat smoke layer.

Finish: Caramel, dates, oranges - lots of sweetness continues behind the smoke. Charcoal and powerful peat linger, and we get fizzy wood smoke and a prickling warmth from that strength. Sugary malty notes arrive, and we find savory flavors like barbecued chicken and Worcestershire sauce followed by blackberry compote, medicinal accents, vanilla, and dried meats. It's a very long finish.

Final Note: Oh wow, this is about the biggest flavor bomb of a whisky that we can remember trying in a long time, maybe ever. Waves of smoky peat, woody notes, an absolute blast of fruit after that - red fruit, purple fruit, orange fruit, everything. The savory side was a special treat when it showed up... there are a lot of layers to dig into with this whisky if you have the time. It doesn't show any subtlety or restraint, but that's part of the fun of a whisky like this.

Let's look at value. Generally, we find SMWS bottlings to be a little below average in terms of value due to their high price, in spite of how good they often are. Indeed, this 10 year old Bunnahabhain comes with a whopping price tag of $170, which seems crazy considering the age; because of the amazing flavor, though, we would be willing to pay it again. Value for us is fair.
